d. May 21, 2025
Wilson Roland Bates , lovingly known as "Sam," departed this life peacefully at home in Woodbridge, Virginia, on May 21, 2025, at the age of 86. He was born on October 25, 1938, in Dumfries, Virginia, to the late Mitchell and Martha Bates.
Wilson dedicated many years of service to the Virginia Department of Transportation. He was a hardworking man who found great joy in simple pleasures that included strumming his guitar, listening to blues and gospel music, watching WWE, enjoying breakfast at Bob Evans, spending time outdoors, and traveling to West Virginia for a bit of fun. Wilson would always have a cup of coffee or a cherry Coke in his hand, along with a donut.
He was a Godfearing man who lived a life grounded in faith, love, and laughter. Wilson cherished his family and friends deeply and was known for his humor, kindness, and ability to light up any room.
Wilson was preceded in death by his siblings, Leroy Bates and Mary Alice Moore; and his nephew, Steven Bates.
He leaves to cherish his memory the love of his life, Margie Jackson; his daughters, Felicia and LaToya (Raynell); grandchildren, Sherrell, Kierra (Cobby), Lanisha, Janiya, Jasmine, Saviona, and India; great-grandchildren, Aden, Liam, and Malia; his loving brother, Garnell Bates; his two nephews, Harold Bates and Eddie Moore; niece, Nita Williams; and great-nieces, Kaye Washington and Tiara Marcone.
Wilson also leaves behind dear friends, Larry Bates (Bunkie), Philip Brown, and Amos Holloway, along with many extended family members and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
