Obituary

On the evening of June 6, 2026, Walter J. Chew passed from this world to his Heavenly Home, surrounded by loving friends and family.

Walter was born August 13, 1945 to the late Elvin and Birdie Chew and gave his life to the Lord at an early age. For his schooling, he attended John J Wright until he began to work to support his family. In his 80 years of life, Walter performed many jobs, including – but certainly not limited to – racing, car mechanics, small engine repair, carpentry, boat driving, construction, and heavy equipment operation.

Known as "Hercules," "the Mower Doctor," and "Big Walt," he always had a story to tell or an idea on his mind. Anyone who knew him heard about his racecar or that time he lifted a tractor about ten or twelve times, but it never got old. Whenever you called him, he'd either be in the backyard working on a lawnmower, or getting up to trouble at the casino with his cousin, Wendell. A loud, funny, and loving man, the Mower Doctor left a solid impact on everyone he encountered.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents, Elvin and Birdie Chew; his daughter, Arschell Wiggins; two brothers, Ed Chew and Joseph Chew; and three sisters, Florence Chapman, Helen Fox, and Alice Mae Waller.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Kimberly Chew; 8 children, Kimbell Chew, Wanda Chew, Berdenia Chew, Tiffany Chew, Keshia Covington, Walter Covington, Brandi Breivik (AJ), and Wendy Chew; 3 sisters, Bernice Harris, Birdie Bundy (Kenny), and Loretta Noel (Oliver), and a grand host of cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 10:00 AM followed by a Celebration of Life at 10:30 AM. The interment will follow at Third Mr. Zion Baptist Church, 9132 Fredericksburg Turnpike, Woodford, VA, 22580.
