Obituary

Viola Williams , 96 of Partlow, VA, departed this life on August 29, 2022. She was the eldest daughter of the late Oliver and Caroline Mercer of Spotsylvania County. Her Christian journey started early at Beulah Baptist Church and later moved to Sylvannah Baptist Church. There, she worked with the
missionary while she was able.

She was a person that loved caring for her family and others that may have needed a little assistance from time to time. Viola was a hard worker, one who saw when a job had to be done and was determined to see it all the way through. She could be a mentor, and advisor, whether you took it or not. She could be stern, strong in her belief, a no-nonsense character. Viola was a strong woman who could use a chainsaw and weed wacker, which was shown by her immaculate yard. She loved to cook for everyone, that was her love language.

She was the matriarch of the Mercer family. She was also a pioneer that paved the way for her daughter all the way down to her great grandchildren. When she was not working her day job, Viola could be seen working a large garden, whether vegetable or flower and raising hogs and chickens. There were times when she even dabbled in a little carpentry, which still stands today.

This lady was preceded in death by not only her parents, but several brothers (Leroy Mercer, Albert Mercer, and Robert Joe Mercer) and one sister (Mary Cole).

She leaves to mourn her death, a daughter, Louise Powell (Henry);two grandchildren; Carla Gaines (LaRoy) and Clinton Powell; two great grandchildren, Maricka Stephens and TyShiana Powell; two sisters, Ruby Ware, and
Grace Ware; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A viewing will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at 10:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Click here to view the funeral service program. The interment will be held at Sylvannah Baptist Church Cemetery.
