Obituary

Tomeka Nicole "Meeka" Washington , age 47, formerly of Kearneysville, West Virginia, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2025, at her home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She was a graduate of Rappahannock High School (where she was a member of the girls' basketball & track and field teams), in Washington, Virginia. She also attended Lord Fairfax Community College in Warrenton, Virginia. She was employed by First Division Consulting, Inc., as a Logistics Analyst at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. Tomeka had a plethora of talents and skillsets. Our beloved daughter was a self-taught musician developing a passion for guitars, banjos, fiddles, and mandolins with a captive family audience. She also developed an interest and skillset in woodworking, carpentry, and joinery, creating items for family and friends. Tomeka also had a passion for saponification (soap making) for which she started a small business (bars of her creation are at the rear of the auditorium to remember her by).

An avid poetry reader and writer of the spoken word of poetry, she spent her meditating time writing poetry in her poetry journals.

In her rare moments of idle time, she liked to go fishing with her mother and stepfather for a wide variety of saltwater and freshwater fish.

Her most recent devotion and enthusiastic endeavor was providing the family with organically grown vegetables (potatoes, corn, tomatoes, lettuce, beans, carrots, peppers, and zucchini), fruits, and herbs. Most importantly, she was a true mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter who ALWAYS put family FIRST and FOREMOST! As the oldest child and grandchild, she suffered from the oldest child syndrome and was bossy by nature.

She was proceeded in death by her much beloved maternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Ray (Daddy) and Olivia Lorraine Washington (Mommie); paternal grandparents, Ms. Lena Carey & Mr. Charles Taylor; her brother, Carlos Carey; aunt, Lorretta Washington; uncle, Roger Lee Washington; and cousin, Matthew Washington.

Tomeka leaves behind her mother and stepfather, Teresa Lorraine Moppins and Larry Moppins, Sr.; a devoted and cherished son, Darren Joey Deshawn Washington and beloved Daughter-In-Law Claudia Batalla-Washington; the true loves of her soul, heart and spirit, her grandsons, Caesar Rey Washington and Damion Xavier Washington; sisters, Deanna Lorraine Carey, Carla Juanita Lorraine Johnson, and Kimberly Georgina Moppins of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Christine Carey of Martinsburg, West Virginia; a brother, Larry Moppins, Jr. and sister-in-law Rebecca-Chaves-Moppins of San Antonio, Texas; aunts and a uncle, Joy Hosby of Martinsburg, West Virginia, Regina Washington of Manassas, Virginia, Lisa Washington and husband Marcello of Ranson, West Virginia, Michele M. Bland, Jasmine A. Carey and Kyla Johnson; nephews, Anthony Johnson, Isiah Johnson, Eliah Carey, Demeir Carey, Alex Carey, Eli Moppins, Max Moppins, and Jayden Johnson.
