Theodore
Sampson
d. Aug 23, 2023
A devoted husband, dedicated police officer, trusted and reliable friend, Teddy Sampson departed this earth on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, on September 16, 1952, Teddy was raised by his father, Alexander Sampson and mother, Eugenia Sampson on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, in the Alfred E. Smith housing projects. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic school, as well as Public School 1. Teddy graduated from Seward Park High School in 1970. He later attended SUNY Plattsburgh where he was awarded his A.A. degree.
After graduation, Teddy worked as a freelance photographer. He perused the news sources to find out where there were events that would attract major entertainers, politicians, and other newsworthy celebrities. Camera in hand, Teddy would jostle alongside TV cameramen and newspaper photographers, to get "the shot." That shot, that he could sell to one of the New York newspapers, or add to his impressive collection. He acquired photos of many celebrities of the 1970s – Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson; NY Yankee slugger, Reggie Jackson; even the iconic Jacqueline Onassis.
Later, Teddy worked as a para-professional, for the New York City Board of Education. Shortly afterwards, Teddy realized his true passion – becoming a member of the New York Police Department. The police department offered Teddy an opportunity to showcase his true talents: intelligence, sensitivity to others, and his courage.
Teddy became an exemplary officer, rising to the rank of Detective in a relatively short time. He was known as an "active cop," working intense investigations, and dangerous undercover assignments, for which he received several commendations.
It was during that time that Teddy met the love of his wife, Elizabeth. They were wed on September 20, 2002. The love they shared created an everlasting bond, one that inspired Teddy to write a love letter titled, "My Sweetie Pie." It was published in Newsday newspaper in Merle English's column, along with photo of the loving couple in a passionate embrace:
"You're the love of my life; Elizabeth, the jewel of my total being, the very pulse that keeps my heart beating…
"You are my soulmate, my confidante, my friend, and my wife at my side. To grow spiritually, mentally, and physically with you, is the essence of my life…"
After Teddy's NYPD career was cut short by an on-duty injury, he utilized his skills and training, working in private security for celebrities, and other high-profile individuals, and at major New York City events.
Teddy and Elizabeth moved from Queens, NY and settled in Fredericksburg, Va. The native New Yorkers quickly adapted into their community, and found a church home to follow their faith. Both became active church members at House of Victory Fredericksburg Church. Teddy continued his work as a mentor, and role model for youth, and at-risk individuals, often working with local law enforcement.
He was also an active member of the local NAACP, and provided security for visiting African-American leaders including, Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In addition to his loving wife, Elizabeth, Teddy is survived by a host of in-laws, cousins, colleagues and friends, all of whom will miss him, but who have been impacted by his presence on this earth.
A viewing will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 9:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. The interment will be held privately.
