Obituary

Susie Martha Washington-Grant , 76, of Spotsylvania, Virginia, slipped away and joined the heavenly angels on Sunday, January 28, 2024.

Susie accepted Christ at an early age at Beulah Baptist Church in Woodford, Virginia. She served faithfully as a food bank assistant, and as a member of the health, culinary, and usher ministries.

Susie graduated from John J. Wright Consolidated School, Spotsylvania, VA in 1968. After graduating high school, she immediately joined the workforce and served in several industries including the garment, hospitality, interior decorating, childcare, transport, and retail. Her passion for sewing, coupled with an inspirational sermon by her pastor, led her to open Ladies Fashions, a ladies' dress shop in Fredericksburg, VA.  She was a natural seamstress with the innate ability to design clothing for both men and women at a moment's notice based on her clients' desires. Her finished products always exceeded customers' expectations. Unfortunately, after operating independently for many years, Susie closed her business to assist with the care of ill family members.

Susie married the love of her life, Elijah Grant, on September 30, 1995. They took delight in life's simplest pleasures such as spending time with family and friends, and hosting the annual family Easter, Mother's Day, and Fourth of July holiday events.

After the birth of her niece Jessica Dixon, Susie became her caretaker for the first two years of her life. She visited Jessica daily, even on weekends when she was off.  As Jessica grew older, Susie always attended her school events, social functions, designed costumes and helped with organizing Jessica's school and social fund-raising activities.

She loved entertaining and was involved in all family gatherings. She was smart, humorous, witty, and inquisitive. Every conversation with her resulted in laughter. She loved dancing, listening to music, playing cards, especially spades and bid whist, that lasted till the early hours of the morning, fueled by her never-ending wit.  She loved traveling with family and friends. She traveled to Anchorage, Alaska to visit a family member, loved it and stayed for a year.  Her genuine concern for the health and well-being of family and friends earned her a host of long-time friends and family respect. She also enjoyed doing yard work around her property and tending to her flowers. As a devoted member of the John J. Wright Alumni Association, she worked diligently to advance the vision and mission of the Association.

After her husband passed in 2019, she returned to the workforce to fill the void. The last four years preceding her death, she worked as a School Bus Aide for the Spotsylvania County School District where she assisted in ensuring precious children were safely transported to and from school.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elijah Grant; parents, Rachel and Wilbur Washington; two sisters, Lucy E. Wright and Ruth J. Washington; five brothers, Joseph, Henry, David, Steven and Sherman Washington; and stepsons Elijah and Jerome Wells.

Susie slipped away unexpectedly and went home to eternal rest on her 76th birthday. She leaves to cherish many happy memories; three sisters, Mary Carter, Linda Galimore-Faux (Eku) and Brenda Dixon; and one brother, Robbie Washington. In addition to her loving siblings, she also leaves to cherish her memory stepdaughter, Sandra Grant-Warren; stepson, Alfred Wells; brothers-in-law Kenneth Sharp, Pete, and William Grant; sisters-in-law, Mary Alice Morgan, and Diane Reed; devoted cousins, Jean Minor, Alice Armstead, and Helen Lewis; a loving godson, Rodney White; devoted longtime friends, Shelby Robinson, Laverne Bumbrey, Rita Smith, and Vonda Alston; a host of dearly loved nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family members, and acquaintances.

A viewing will be held at Beulah Baptist Church, 5216 Arcadia Road, Woodford, VA 22580, on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 10:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. The interment will follow at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery.
