Obituary

Stanley Raymond Moss, Sr. , entered this world on August 27, 1934, in Spotsylvania, Virginia, to the late, Herbert and Elenora Moss. He was the third of four siblings. Stanley joined First New Hope Baptist Church at an early age. He was educated within the Spotsylvania County School System. Stanley was a proud graduate of John J. Wright High School, Class of 1952.

On September 11, 1952, Stanley enlisted with the United States Army. He served in the Korean War where he was stationed in Germany and assigned to the border patrol division before being transferred to the artillery unit division. Stanley took great pride in serving his country.

After his military career, he met the love of his life. On April 28, 1957, a special thing happened when Stanley married his one and only, Virginia Lewis whom he cherished very much. The two would go onto have six beautiful children. Stanley continued to pursue his career with Thompson Van Lines, Quarles, McLane (formerly known as Southland) for 18 years until retirement. After a few months of retirement, Stanley couldn't deny his career passion any longer, and eagerly returned to work as a truck driver for American Color for 13 years until he ultimately retired in 2018.

Stanley loved gardening. He was known for growing fresh produce to share with others in the community. Even if that meant he had to crawl to pick vegetables from his garden, he didn't let that stop him. Stanley also enjoyed working on various tasks around his home that required his tractor which he loved. He was absolutely obsessed with cutting grassed. During the summer months, you could easily find him planting flowers, and cutting grass at his home, his family cemetery, or any local cemeteries in the community. He wasn't just an outdoorsman. Stanley did all of the grocery     shopping for over 65 years and was a well known shopper at his favorite stores that included Giant, BJ's Wholesale Club, and Walmart just to name a few. In his spare time, he enjoyed trips to Virginia Beach.

On February 26, 2022, Stanley received a NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, highlighting his service and contributions to the community. He was also a member of the John J. Wright Alumni Association. Stanley was honored to be a member of First New Hope Baptist Church for 82 years, where he was the oldest member.

Stanley peacefully departed this life on Saturday, March 4, 2023, surrounded by his devoted wife, and loving children. His sense of humor, infectious smile, and presence will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his children, Doris Marshall, and Harry Moss; siblings, Fred Moss, and Doris Suber.

Stanley leaves a loving legacy to his wife of 65 years, Virginia Moss; dedicated children, Stanley Moss, Jr. (Dianne), Reginald Moss, Cheryl Black (Harold, Sr.), and Gayle Buckner (Donald); his grandchildren, Natasha Marshall, Devin Marshall (Brittney), Sheena Clark (Benny), Ashley Moss, Stanley Moss, III, Talaya Waddy, (Michael), Lakishia Puller (Derek), Talaine Moss, Jennifer Hunter (Joseph, Sr.), and Harold Black, Jr. (Jessica); seventeen great grandchildren; his sister, Marion Green; sisters-in-law, Bessie Washington, Annie Warren, Jane Lewis, and Hazel Lewis; one brother-in-law, Harold Lewis; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives, and friends.
