Obituary

The life and legacy of Elder Robert Ervin Burton began on May 27, 1940, in Altavista, Virginia, to the late Edwin and Amy Burton. He was raised in Roanoke, Virginia where he received his early education through the Roanoke City Public Schools System, graduating from Lucy Addison High School in 1959. With a desire to further his studies, he later attended John Tyler Community College in Chester, Virginia.

On June 7, 1965, Robert was united in holy matrimony to Shirley A. Burton, beginning of a beautiful journey together that included the joy of raising three children—Tracy, Kirk, and Robert II. Their union was a true testament of love, companionship, and devotion, creating a foundation of family bonds that enriched their lives and the lives of those around them for many years. His beloved wife, Shirley, preceded him death on July 12, 2025.

Robert faithfully served 22 years in the United States Army, retiring with honor as a Master Sergeant in 1983. His extensive military service reflected his unwavering commitment to his country and his dedication to duty. Following his retirement from the Army, he continued to serve through a distinguished career in the Federal Service. From 1983 to 1990, he worked as a Transportation Officer at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, in Washington D.C., and from 1990 to 1996, he served as an Occupational Health and Safety Officer at the Federal Supply Service Bureau, also in Washington D.C. Robert retired from Federal Service in December 1996, completing over 34 years of combined military and federal service—a true testament to his hard work, leadership, and lifelong dedication to both his country and his community.

Robert was actively involved with the Junior Achievement Program of Washington, D.C., where he mentored junior high school students through the "Stay in School Program." His commitment to encouraging and guiding young people reflected his passion for education and his desire to see the next generation succeed. Beyond his professional and community service, Robert enjoyed a wide variety of interests that showcased his vibrant and dynamic personality. He was an avid fan of football and basketball, had a love for auto drag racing, and delighted in the creativity of model railroads. He also enjoyed bowling, a pastime that brought both fun and fellowship, as well as photography—you could always find him with a camera in hand, ready to capture the moment.

His greatest leisure interest, however, was working on automobiles. This passion not only highlighted his technical skill and expertise, but also his hands-on approach to life. He found fulfillment in both practicing and teaching automotive technology, sharing his knowledge generously with others. Robert truly lived a rich and varied life, filled with passions and pursuits that brought him joy, fulfillment, and lasting connections with those around him.

Robert's commitment to his faith and community shined brightly through his service alongside his beloved wife, Shirley, as devoted pastors of Christian Hope Center Church (CHCC) in Woodbridge, Virginia— "Where satisfaction is guaranteed because Jesus is Lord!" Within the church, he served faithfully in many capacities, including Head Usher, Men's Fellowship Coordinator, and Trustee Board Member. Through these roles, he demonstrated not only his leadership but also his humility and willingness to serve, always seeking to support the spiritual growth and well-being of the congregation. In 2005, Robert advanced his theological studies, earning a Master of Divinity degree, Summa Cum Laude, from Christian Hope Bible College, where he was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity. This milestone reflected his deep devotion to God's Word and his lifelong pursuit of spiritual excellence.

In July 2005, Pastor Robert and his wife, Shirley, entered a new season of their spiritual journey, retiring as Pastors of Christian Hope Center Church and becoming members and ordained Elders of Victory Christian Ministries International (VCMI) in Woodbridge, Virginia, under the leadership of Apostles Tony and Cynthia Brazelton. In this chapter of his life, he continued to serve faithfully as an instructor for the VCMI New Covenant Partners' Classes and at Victory Bible College, in Suitland, Maryland. Whenever called upon by the apostles—whether to teach, preach, counsel, or advise, Elder Robert answered with humility and dedication, serving as unto the Lord.

He leaves cherished memories with his daughter, Tracy Burton; five grandchildren: Chloe Burton, Carlei Burton, Desmond Burton, Nathanyel Burton, and Robert Glynn. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his two sons, Kirk and Robert Burton II.
