Obituary

Annie Minerva Bumbrey Scranage was born on September 7, 1923, to the late Galvia and Mary (Johnson) Bumbrey of King George, Virginia. She was united in holy matrimony to Charles Edward Scranage on Oct. 19, 1941.  One son, Donald Charles, and one daughter, Elaine Prezine, were born to this union.

She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and became a member of Little Ark Baptist Church under the pastorship of the late Rev. George Carter.  She studied piano through correspondence with the late Lucille Banks in Washington, D.C.and gospel music with Mrs. Dorothy Jones of Thornburg, VA.Over the years she served as a main and/or substitute pianist for local churches, including Peoples Union Baptist Church, Antioch Baptist Church, and Little Ark Baptist Church in King George, VA.  During the 1970s, she was ordained as a Deaconess at Little Ark Baptist Church with the inaugural groupof women under the pastorship of the late Rev. Dr. John W. Chapman and faithfully served in this position for many years.

She was very active in various community serving and faith-based organizations. She served as President and Secretary of the American Legion Auxiliary, post 329, providing support to U.S. military service members, veterans, and their families.   For a short time, she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was a faithful caregiver and homemaker.  For years she faithfully served the Reiter and Storke families of Dahlgren, VA.  She loved to sew, and this showed up in her own stylish outfits as well as outfits that she made for Elaine during elementary school. She also loved to bake, especially at Christmas, and was known for her infamous fruit cake, yeast drop rolls, as well asher coconut butter bars and pecan chocolate chip cookies.  She also enjoyed working in her flower gardens in both the front and back yard.  She always had a beautiful mix of perennials and annuals that bloomed from early spring to late fall.

As her health began to fail, she relocated to Lorton, VA to live with her daughter and son-in-law and regularly attended New Hope Church until it became more difficult for her to leave the house. During this time, she never gave up her daily devotions as well as reading her Better Homes and Gardens and Southern Living magazines.  She recently enjoyed celebrating her 100thbirthday with close family members and was surprised by and forever grateful for the wonderful gift basket and cards from New Hope's senior women's group that she read during the whole month of September 2023.  In her last days she had begun reading the biography of a friend in the community and an unsung hero, Dr. Gladys West.  She was amused that family members and friends were mentioned in the book.

Her last regular sayings were: "I am truly blessed." "The Lord is so good." and "You be blessed!"  She went home to rest in the arms of her Lord and Savior on the evening of December 19, 2023, being celebrated by a cloud of witnesses on her homecoming. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Eddie and two brothers (Richard Bumbrey and WilliamBumbrey) and eight sisters-in-law. She leaves to cherish many wonderful memories, her two children, Donald C. Scranage and Elaine S. Ward; her devoted son-in-law, George E. Ward; five grandchildren, Karen Mayo, Craig Scranage (Kim), Steven Scranage, Brittany Ward, and Olivia Ward; four great grandchildren, Bruce Mayo, Jr., Kori Mayo, Craig G. C.
