Milton Lee "Pete" Gunn , 83, of Stafford, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2025, at his home on 3 Brush Everard Ct. A kind, joyful soul with a quick wit and ready smile, Milton touched the lives of all who knew him—whether on the basketball court, at the bowling alley, or among friends and family.
Born on December 24, 1941, in Petersburg, Virginia, Milton was the beloved son of Alonzo and Jessie Mae Gunn. He grew up excelling in sports, graduating from Luther Jackson High School in Merrifield, where he shone on basketball, football, and baseball teams. Milton's skill and determination led him to serve in the U.S. Navy, where he not only answered the call of duty but also proudly played basketball for the national team.
In the 1960s, Milton broke barriers as the first African American recruited to play basketball at the University of New Mexico. After his military service, he dedicated more than 30 years to the U.S. Postal Service before enjoying a well-earned retirement.
Milton's true passion was bowling. Beginning in the late 1960s, he maintained a 200+ average throughout his career and became a PBA member in 1992. Affectionately regarded as an ambassador for the sport, Milton achieved numerous accolades, including 23 perfect games, 13 800 series, selection to the Nation's Capital Associations Hall of Fame, and the inaugural Icon Award from the Greater Fredericksburg Bowling Association. He especially cherished coaching youth and fellow bowlers, inspiring many—including Hall of Fame members—to reach their potential.
Milton is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Patricia; his daughter, Gena Gunn; his son, Micheal Gunn; and his brother, Gilbert Gunn (Gretchen), Sister In-law Jeannette Gunn, Sister In-law Shirley Fossett (Gene), And a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Alonzo and Jessie Mae Gunn and brothers Thomas Gunn (Deloris) and Edward Gunn and brother In-law Lawrence Brightful III and Sister In-law Barbara Jean Brightful.
Milton will be fondly remembered for his good humor, generous mentorship, and unwavering devotion to those around him. His legacy lives on through his family and the countless lives he encouraged both on and off the lanes.
