Mildred
Jackson
d. Apr 1, 2022
Mildred Howard Jackson was born to the late Corrine and Stephen Turner in Woodford, Virginia. Mildred was one of ten children born of this union.
Mildred knew the Lord from a young age, was baptized by the late Reverend Melvin Johnson, and joined Macedonia Baptist Church in Woodford. Mildred married her childhood sweetheart, Arthur Lee Jackson (deceased) on July 4, 1954. Mildred and Arthur moved to New York City where they lived and worked until a job opportunity took them to Rochester, New York. While in Rochester, they welcomed their daughter Denise Elaine. Eventually life took Mildred and Arthur to Morristown, New Jersey where they made their home for 47 years. Mildred was educated in the Caroline County School System and attended the County College of Morris.
Mildred worked for the Morris County Board of Education first, as a Teacher's Aide, and then as the School Secretary for Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. Mildred loved working with the teachers and the students but especially enjoyed summer break. Even years after retiring, Mildred would wake up early on snowy days to turn on the TV to find out if school was closed, grateful that she didn't have to go out.
Mildred retired from the School District and she and Arthur immediately began traveling and enjoying the freedom that retirement offered. In addition to seeing most of the United States, Mildred was able to travel to Canada, the Caribbean, and West Africa.
In 2010 Mildred and Arthur moved back to Virginia where they lived in a beautiful retirement community in Lansdowne and enjoyed riding around seeing the sights (Arthur loved to drive) while listening to jazz or blues. They also enjoyed dining out, going to nearby casinos, and visiting family.
Mildred was a devoted wife and mother. She was supportive of her family's every endeavor. Mildred was a great cook and hosted many holiday meals for friends and family. She was particularly well known for her cakes, pies, and baked macaroni and cheese. Mildred loved to shop especially at Christmas time – and passed that love on to Denise. Even in her later years she enjoyed decorating the house and seeing the Christmas lights.
Mildred was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Morristown where she served on the Usher Board and the Missionary Board.
Mildred was Arthur's right hand for 58 years.
Mildred was called home to Glory and she slipped away quietly on Friday afternoon. She was predeceased by sisters Hattie, Blanche, Sallie, and Edyth and by brothers, Jake, George, William, Thornton, and Junior. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Denise (John White), a cousin, Deacon Melvin Howard, sisters-in-law, June, Dianne, Marie, Delores, Joan (Angela), and Irene; brothers-in-law, Ross, Willie, Dillard and Raymond; her Morristown, NJ family; special friends, Mary Chatalian, Linda Caplan, Maria Ferman, and Sharon Adams, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
A viewing will be held at First Baptist Church, 9262 Guinea Station Road, Woodford, VA, on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 10:00 AM followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM. The Reverend Ritta Armstead will officiate the service. The interment will follow at the Guss Family Cemetery.
