Obituary

It is with extreme sorrow that we announce the passing of Mrs. Maxine Ann (Gray) Toliver on February 15, 2026, at the age of 57.  Born on August 5, 1968, in Saint Andrews, Jamaica West Indies, to Eden and Fay Gray.

Maxine leaves behind her loving and devoted husband, Roy V. Toliver of Stafford, VA, and three sons, Roylando (Diana), Michael, and Christian (aka CJ).

She was the Queen in a family of men. Roy often joked that in their home the men were outnumbered by this one amazing woman. Her sons were the most important aspect of her life, and where she poured her time, intelligence and love into. She will forever remain the central part of their lives. In the household, which included four men she was the Queen.

Maxine grew up in a family of four brothers and two sisters, Dean, Danny, Yvonne, (Norval), Peter (Leona), Robert, and Sharon (Errol).  Maxine was a dedicated and tenured employee at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), Woodbridge Campus where she served as the Director of Campus Operations until January 31, 2026.  Her knowledge of NOVA and her professionalism was only surpassed by the love she had for the Woodbridge Campus.  Always the smartest person in the room, while never overbearing nor overshadowing those of lesser rank and authority.

Maxine found a friend in every space she visited, regardless of work or leisure, always willing to give her time to help anyone in need.  The loss of Maxine's impact on the world is only lessened by the number of lives she positively influenced in her lifetime.  Her coworkers became friends and her friends are all family.  In Maxine's world everyone had a voice and everyone deserved to be heard.

Maxine was an excellent cook.  She loved to garden, travel, decorate, sing and dance.  Maxine had an infectious smile and a heart as wide as the endless sky. She did everything with love and kindness whether it was cooking her delicious meals, working, mentoring or singing along to the radio.  Joy was her default no matter what the situation presented.  Strength was her superpower and encouragement was her elixir for all. Maxine's life was a beautiful example of love, kindness and compassion.  Her family was the cornerstone of her life.  She leaves behind a fulfilling legacy of strength, love, kindness and faith.
