Mary
Ghee
d. Feb 4, 2026
Mary Theresa (West) Ghee entered life on November 10, 1930, in Harlem Hospital in New York City. She was the only child born to the union of Edward Petrus and Martha Janey West. However, shortly after her birth, she moved and was raised in the home of her maternal grandparents Willie Champ and Mary West in Prince Edward County, VA.
The lord mercifully called her home to Heaven on February 4, 2026, in Fredericksburg, VA after a long illness.
Affectionally known to her family as "Dees", she accepted God at an early age and was baptized at Monroe Baptist Church Rice, VA. She also started her education in the one-room school adjacent to the church (Monroe School). She continued and finished her education in the (racially segregated) Prince Edward County Public School System. She attended Robert R. Moton High School and was selected as Homecoming Queen in 1949.
After the family moved to Spotsylvania (Cooktown) in 1972, Mary decided to focus a lot of her time in the service of the Lord. She became a valued member of Zion Hill Baptist Church. Over the years she served in many capacities: Culinary Committee, Combined Choir, Senior Choir, Sunday School President, Vacation Bible School President, Best Agers, Missionary President and Pastor's Aide. She was rewarded with many awards and recognition (too many to list).
She helped to raise many generations of children, both inside and outside of her family. All children knew her as "Mama Ghee". She, especially, was integral in raising three of her grandsons during their high school years. She also acted as a "second mother" to her next-door neighbor's daughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Alfronzo Ghee; sons, Leroy Ross, Jr., and Wayne Ghee; daughter, Geraldine Brown; grandsons, Malik Ross and Dale "G-Man" Ghee, Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Carl Ross of Capitol Heights, MD, and Dale Ghee of Spotsylvania, VA; two daughters, Deborah (Raymond) Evans of Salem, CT, and Deacon Patricia (Lloyd) Fox of Spotsylvania, VA; daughter-in-law, Carol Ghee of Fayetteville, NC; twelve grandchildren, Wardell "Rocky" (Michelle) Woolfolk, Duane Ross, Alonzo (Angela) Woolfolk, Patrick (Keisha) Ghee, Brandon (Theresa) Ghee , Raymond "RJ" (Ashley) Evans, Kastine Evans, Tashsia Mathis, John Berryman, Tajsha Hawthorne, Tiana Brown and Raymond Brown; many great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren; Connie (Bobby) Herndon affectionately called "Moma Sister" who cared for her; special friends, ("Golden Girls") Jean Dyson, Ruth "Tinnie" Cook, Brenda Terrell and Doris (Paul) Mckinney; countless cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A viewing will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home, 200 Butternut Drive, Fredericksburg, VA, 22408, on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour before the funeral service. A funeral service will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home, on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 11:00 AM. The interment will follow at Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, 10411 Cooktown Road, Spotsylvania, VA, 22551.
