Obituary

Holy Amethyst , born Loretta Yvonne Johnson Elie , entered this world on October 14, 1949, and transitioned peacefully on June 8, 2025. She was the cherished daughter of Elizabeth Catie Cowart and Donald R. Johnson, Sr.

She married Enoch Elie in 1973, and from their union came her beloved daughter, Syreeta Elie. Loretta was the proud grandmother, to Xelia Calandra (Elie) Murray and her husband, Victor, Kaiya Rose Tirado, Zian Amir Elie, and Zaria Liana Petra Elie. She adored her great-grandchildren, Kaiden, Ki'Lynn (in heaven with her Yaya), and Amira.

Known to many as Holy Amethyst, a name given to her by her spiritual guides, she was a gifted sound healer who used vibration and frequency to help others find healing and peace. She loved crystals, meditation, and music—especially Prince. She was one of the founding members of the Healing Circle, where she formed deep spiritual bonds and found joy meditating with her dear friends and spending time with her best friend, Deborah Coleman.

Loretta was deeply connected to nature and enjoyed early morning walks, striking up conversations and friendships everywhere she went. She especially cherished her winter travels to California to be with her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her maternal siblings, Eleanor F. Payton, Gloria D. Payton Brooks, Velma L. Spencer Phillips, Cassandra Y. Spencer, Brenda Spencer McCree, Donald G. Payton, and Desiree Johnson; her paternal siblings, Donnie Johnson, Jr., Gale Johnson (Brooks), Michael Johnson, and Greg Johnson; and a host of other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Elizabeth Catie Cowart and Donald R. Johnson Sr., and by her dear brothers, Melton D. Payton and Harold G. Payton. Loretta's legacy lives on through a vast family, a circle of loving friends, and all those whose lives she touched with her warmth, wisdom, and radiant light.
