Lillian
Bullock
d. Jun 26, 2024
Lillian Adeeb Bullock was a lifelong educator who encouraged not only those that she taught but everyone she met to attain knowledge and education. She was born Lillian Adeeb in Brooklyn, New York City on June 5, 1928, to Hussein Adeeb and Lillian Robertson. She was the youngest of four children. She had three older brothers (Hassan, Abbas, & Samuel) who always looked after their sister. She always said she never had a problem at school because everyone knew she had three older brothers who would take care of anyone who tried to bother her.
Appreciating the value of education from the start, she attended NYC Schools and started her career working at James Monroe High School in the Bronx, NY—initially as the School Secretary. She married John R. Bullock Jr., who predeceased her, and had two children, Juanita Diane Pitchford (deceased) and John R. Bullock III. After starting her family, Lillian returned to college, receiving both her college degree and later a master's degree from the City University of New York.
She spent her career as a teacher. She initially taught business education at James Monroe High School in the Bronx until she retired from the NYC Board of Education in 1981 to move to Spotsylvania, Virginia to be with her daughter's family. She continued her career as an educator at Spotsylvania High School teaching business education from 1982 - 1987. After retiring for a second time, she continued to substitute teach in the Spotsylvania school system well into the 2000s. She loved all her students and always encouraged all of them to reach high to achieve their goals as her father had taught her. She was always quoting the philosophy of her father who reared four children after the passing of her mother when Mrs. Bullock was three years old. She believed in education and the passing on of knowledge and experiences to others and encouraged others to do the same.
Never one to sit still for long, Mrs. Bullock's "retirement" also included working part-time for the City of Fredericksburg in the Probation Office, Registrar's Office, and Fredericksburg Regional Transit (FRED). She was also a caregiver for an older brother for six years.
She was active in her church, Shiloh Old Site Baptist Church, serving on the Thurman Brisben Homeless Shelter Church Board. She was a member of the NAACP, FACRO, AARP, Spotsylvania Afro-American Retired Teachers Association, Fredericksburg Area Retired Education Association, and the Hollybrooke Senior Citizens Association.
She was pre-deceased by her loving daughter, Juanita Pitchford and her son-in-law, Robert Pitchford, her daughter-in-law, Rose Bullock, and a grandson, John R. Bullock III.
She is survived by her son, John R. Bullock, Jr.; her grandchildren, Aliya, Malina, Lillian, Robert, Juanita, Marina, and Christina; her great-grandchildren, Ivy, Kaiyla, Robert III, Jeremy Jr., Raquel, Rakaiya, and Joy; many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews, formers students, and friends. While we know that she is happy to again be with her daughter and her parents, she will be missed here.
Because of her love of her church's community outreach activities, memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh Old Site Baptist Church, 801 Sophia Street, Fredericksburg, VA 22401
A viewing will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home on Friday, July 12, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour before the funeral service. A funeral service will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church Old Site on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 10:00 AM. The interment will follow at Laurel Hill Memorial Park in Spotsylvania, VA.
