Lawrence
Bailey
d. Jan 19, 2026
Lawrence Herman Bailey , affectionately known as "Lonnie," was born on May 16, 1946, on Virginia's Eastern Shore. He departed this life on January 19, 2026, leaving behind a legacy marked by a deep commitment to education, a life of service, steadfast leadership, and an unwavering devotion to his family.
A lifelong lover of music and dancing, Lonnie curated an eclectic collection of records—and later CDs—that reflected his wide-ranging tastes. He delighted in bringing people together, often opening his home to friends and family for food, laughter, and evenings filled with music and movement. He was also an avid reader who, over his life, built an extensive personal library spanning an extraordinary range of subjects. His favorites being the Bible followed by Science Fiction.
Lonnie received his early education in both the Accomack County and City of Fredericksburg Public School Systems. Exceptionally bright and driven, he excelled academically and nurtured a lifelong passion for learning. His dedication culminated in his graduating as valedictorian of his class at Mary N. Smith High School.
Lonnie was a proud graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. There he earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering. While at Howard, Lonnie was active in university life. He was member of the HU Campus Pals and the Howard University wrestling team. Throughout his life, he remained a dedicated alumnus to the university, participating in fundraising events. Two of his children would later attend HU as well, following in their father's footsteps.
During his years at Howard University, he was initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in 1966 as a proud member of the Defiant Twenty-Seven. His dedication to fraternity became a lifelong hallmark of his character. A committed Life Member, he remained deeply engaged with the brotherhood, maintaining enduring ties with alumni chapters in Washington, D.C.; Kansas City; Woodbridge, Virginia—where he was a charter member—and Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Following his graduation, Lonnie completed one tour of duty in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of First Lieutenant and earning the Army Commendation Medal for Exceptionally Meritorious Service. In his professional life, he broke new ground as the first African American Health Inspector for Wyandotte County (Kansas City), Kansas, before returning to Washington, D.C. There, he continued his distinguished public service as director of the Washington Area Sewer Authority, reporting directly to the mayor and overseeing the city's pipelayers, sewage fleet, and wastewater treatment operations with steady leadership and unwavering dedication.
Lonnie made his home between Virginia's Eastern Shore and Fredericksburg, Virginia, remaining deeply connected to both communities throughout his life. He retired in 2002 after a distinguished tenure as Chief of Engineering and Maintenance at Quantico Marine Base, where he was held in high regard for his professionalism, technical mastery, and steady, dependable leadership.
Above all, Lonnie was a devoted father and grandfather whose wisdom, guidance, and quiet strength left an enduring imprint on everyone blessed to know him. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Marguerite Young; his daughters, Keisha Bailey-Robinson, Niambi Bailey-Jackson, Bianca Bailey-Redmond, and Fern Wharton; and his son, Brandon Bailey. He also leaves to cherish his memory his beloved grandchildren, Sean-Paul Robinson, Gabriel Jackson, and Anthony (A.J.) Redmond, Jr., as well as a large and loving extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, fraternity brothers, and dear friends.
The Bailey family wishes to thank you for all acts of kindness, love and support to Lonnie throughout his life. We also thank you for all expressions of sympathy, calls, visits, gifts, and the outpouring of loving gestures.
