Cody
d. Jan 27, 2023
Larry Eugene Cody , 71, of Hyattsville, Maryland, earned his wings and ascended to his heavenly home to be with the Lord on January 27, 2023. Larry was born on November 4, 1951, in Fredericksburg, VA, to Johnny and Eloise Cody. His family became stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, NC, where Larry began elementary school. After living in various states, the family returned to Virginia where Larry completed secondary school in Fredericksburg City Public Schools graduating from James Monroe High School in 1970.
After high school, Larry enrolled at Howard University earning a Bachelor of Arts in History. He later earned a Master of Library Science in Information Technology from the University of Maryland at College Park. Larry was a devoted Howard Bison who volunteered many hours working with The Howard University Alumni Club of Greater Washington, DC, including sponsoring the Class of 1975 "Back Together Again" Reunion. Equally, he loved being a Maryland Terrapin and he demonstrated the same level of commitment by attending games, planning events, and remaining active in the alumni association.
Building upon his passions for learning and for sharing knowledge, Larry began his career at the Library of Congress, and later became a media specialist for Prince George's County Public Schools and Montgomery County Government before his retirement. Larry loved the community in which he lived and worked. He was baptized at St. George's Episcopal Church in Washington, DC, where he served on the Usher Board. He further gave to his community by teaching literacy and computer skills to elementary and middle school students. Larry also assured that his neighbors and he lived safely and peacefully as he diligently served as the President of the Hill Oaks Condominium Homeowners Association (HOA) for several years. Larry's membership in organizations such as the Sierra Club, Doctors Without Borders, and the Izaak Walton League further demonstrated his love for people and the environment.
Larry was a true "Renaissance Man." Whatever he decided he wanted to learn or do, he did so with zest, focus, and determination. He was a talented artist who enjoyed a variety of hobbies such as reading, photography, sketching, collecting vintage jazz albums, and riding his motorcycle. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, cycling, and playing tennis.
He regularly attended the games of his favorite professional sports teams - the Baltimore Ravens, the Washington Capitals, and the Washington Nationals. Larry could also be found expanding his knowledge by attending museum events, art shows, and vineyards. In addition, he was a noted connoisseur of fine wines and of life.
Larry was preceded in death by his infant sister, Eileen Yvette Cody, his maternal grandparents, Arthur and Ora (Hackett) Evans of Ruther Glen, VA, and his paternal grandparents Matthew and Mattie (Davis) Cody of Valdosta, GA.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving parents, Johnny B. and Eloise (Evans) Cody of Fredericksburg, VA; siblings, Gilbert Cody (Carol) of Oakland, CA, Bernard Cody of Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic, Deborah Cody Williams (Tyrone) of Fredericksburg, VA , Veronica Cody of Fredericksburg, VA, and Angela Cody Hinrichs (Kurt) of Ruther Glen, VA; god-brother, Eric Morris of Richmond, VA; nieces and nephews, Jonathan Cody, Synee' Vecchitto, Raeshaun Hackett, Baylor Cody, Jordan Point (Melisa), and Kameryn Point; several great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins; other relatives, and friends.
