Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the family of Julius Berger announce his homegoing. This also serves as the time to reflect on the life and impact that Julius made during his time with us.

Julius, a product of the gritty South Bronx, the "Urban Jungle", who from an early age often found himself involved in the criminal justice system. As an adult he relocated to Virginia, hoping to leave behind the streets of the big city, only to find confinement in a penal institution situated in the idyllic, charm of the South located beyond the Mason-Dixon line. Having to serve time turned out to be the path for liberation, spiritual growth, and intellectual enhancement for him.

In 2015, Mr. Berger was the focus of an article printed in the Free Lance Star, entitled "Fredericksburg resident enrolled at the University of Virginia, after spending seven years behind bars". The article highlights his relationship with Doris Buffett, a highly recognized philanthropist and founder of the Sunshine Lady Foundation.

It is through this relationship that he received the support that he needed in order to make higher education a priority in his life. Julius went on to complete an Associate's Degree in Business at Germanna Community College in 2019 and was enrolled at the University of Virginia where he was a few credits shy of receiving his bachelor's degree in Human Services.

Julius was multi-facted, complex and yet simple. He was a man of determination, as demonstrated by his commitment to academic achievement. He was a man of devotion as shown by his unwavering love for family and friends. He was also a man of distinction, who easily created linkages and relationships with other as now reflected in his legacy.

He is remembered by his son, Julius Jr. III., (Lil Jul), brother, Jeffrey, Thelma, sister-in-law, nieces, Jessica and Jasmine, grand nephew, Kelvin, aunt, Jane Berger and uncle, Chucky Johnson. He is preceded in death by his parents, Julius Sr. and Helen Berger. He will be sorrowfully missed and  yet memory cherished by those he encountered. Julius leaves a host of friends, acquaintances and love ones to grieve.

The family would like to thank the medical personnel, especially Dr. Adams at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center for their guidance during this time. Special acknowledgement to Karen Luckett (Lucky), who served as Julius' faithful Home Attendant.
