Obituary

Born on December 2nd, 1951 in The Bronx, New York to the late Betty Ann Smith and Leo Thornton, Joyce loved her family beyond a shadow of a doubt, and always donned the most infectious smile. Being the eldest of ten (10) children, she often assumed leadership of the pack.

Joyce's mind and learning was nurtured in the New York City public school system where she grew a passion for journaling, writing poetry, and an appreciation for glamor that followed her forever. She took to the art's, even scripting a play performed in high school, and dreamed of going all the way and one day becoming a performing artist.

She was passionate about her achievements in the professional space, excelling in her role as a Human Resource Analyst at the University of Mary Washington. She took pride and immense joy in her duties and never turned down an opportunity to learn, grow, and be a continued asset to the organization before enjoying many years in retirement.

Joyce leaves to mourn her four (4) children (Terence Thornton, Yvette Thornton, Sean Garnett, Brandon Garnett); six (6) grand-children (Tyrone 'Dew' Matthews, Terence Thornton, Jr., Niasia Bradford, Kyndall Garnett Patience Garnett, Journi Garnett); and three (3) great-grandchildren (Terence Thornton, III, Taiyana Matthews, Tyking Matthews). She also leaves to mourn her five (5) siblings (Terry Smith, Bobby Smith, Theresa Smith, Darlene Smith, Deborah Smith-Bullock), & a slew of nieces and nephews. Preceding her death (siblings) Shirley Thornton, Rodney Smith, Kenneth Smith, Caroline Smith, whom she loved dearly.

Joyce had a mean poker face and loved sharing good laughs at the cards table with family & friends. Whether she was playing Bingo, Poker, hitting the casino, or a quick game of Spades, she was down for some fun and ready to win! Joyce also enjoyed taking trips, and creating memories traveling with family that will never be forgotten. However, her greatest joy and honor was caring for her mother, Mrs. Betty A. Smith, until she transitioned onto the Lord. She loved studying the bible, and never wavered from testifying to the power of God in her life. She was an active member at the Arm of the Lord Ministry in Fredericksburg, VA.

Joyce's unwavering faith and testimony carried her, and will be an ongoing inspiration and light to those who love her.

A viewing will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at 10:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. The interment will follow at Mount Lawn Cemetery in Woodford, VA.
