John Herndon, Jr. , 79, of Philadelphia, PA, formerly of Spotsylvania, VA, peacefully departed this life on January 1, 2022 at Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse in Philadelphia, PA.

He was born June 5, 1942, to the late John Henry and Josephine Ellis Herndon. He attended public school in Spotsylvania, VA . At an early age he joined Zion Hill Baptist Church in Spotsylvania, VA where Reverend Dwight Hargrove is currently pastor.

John was a masonry most of his young years until he joined the Armed Forces where he later in life became a Vietnam Veteran. He loved playing cards games with his friends, listening to music and watching his favorite cartoons and western films.

John was preceded in death by his wife Gwinalyn "Linda"  E. Slocum- Herndon; brothers, Thomas Cook, Raymond Herndon, Mack Herndon and Lenray Herndon.

He leaves behind a loving legacy to cherish his memory to Deborah Anderson (Emmett), Gertrude Coleman (Michael), John Herndon (Danyel), Victor Herndon (Stephanie) and Kerra Thurston (Curtis); Gervette "GiGi" Green, Brenda Slocum- Pearson, Keith Slocum; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; three sisters, Jean Herndon Dyson of Spotsylvania, Christine Herndon of Fredericksburg, VA; Kayla Herndon of King George, VA; three brothers, Bobby Herndon (Connie), James "Tootsie" Herndon of Spotsylvania, VA and William "Ricky" Herndon of Fredericksburg, VA; sister in law: Jean Ethel Herndon of Fredericksburg, VA and an aunt Martha White of Spotsylvania, Va.  John also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home, 200 Butternut Drive, Fredericksburg, VA, on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at 11:00 AM. The interment will follow at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 10411 Cooktown Road, Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA, 22553.
