Janie
Brown
d. Dec 23, 2021
Janie Marie Brown , affectionately known as "Teny", "Gram", and "Gramsy", was born on February 15, 1933, to the late Percy Baldwin and Martha Jackson in Prince Edward County, VA. She departed this side of Heaven on December 23, 2021. She was married to the late Henry Nathaniel Brown, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her 9 siblings; her sons Michael and Patrick Brown; her stepson Warren Brown, and her grandsons Denzel Hart, Jermon Howard, and Thomas Baldwin. After losing her mother, she cared for her younger siblings. At an early age, Janie joined Race Street Baptist Church in Farmville, VA. She later became a dedicated and longtime member of Bethlehem Baptist Church until her health declined.
Janie received her education in Farmville, VA. She was a great student. She understood the value of education, so it was very important to her. She shared many stories about her accomplishments as a student. One of which, was learning French. She would occasionally share a few words from her French vocabulary. Janie was beloved by many. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, friend, neighbor, and spirit. She was a wonderful and compassionate caregiver. Her care extended beyond family. One of her first jobs was working at a hospital in Farmville, VA. She later relocated to Baltimore, MD, where she continued to care for family and anyone, she encountered that needed help.
To family and friends, she was a world-renowned-chef. Everyone loved her infamous sweet potato pie and potato salad. In the 1960's, she moved back to Virginia, where Spotsylvania, VA, soon became her forever home. She continued her caregiving as a public servant. Janie worked for Virginia League of Family Planning in Spotsylvania, VA as a social worker where she provided support to families in need. She held several jobs as a cook and waitress. She worked for Mary Washington College, The Howard Johnson, and Schiff's Rehab Center. She worked for People's Drugstore for many years. This of course, is no surprise to anyone who knew Janie. She loved to cook, and everyone loved to eat her food. In fact, the family oftentimes joked about her being a "food critic".
Janie later retired but remained active. She had such a great love for children, she became the family and community babysitter. She volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul, Scholarship Funds, and church committees.
Janie "Gramsy", was one of the most loving and caring women you would ever meet. She would go out of her way to help anyone. She never met a stranger; she could carry a conversation with anyone. She had such an amazing sense of humor even on some of her worst days. She enjoyed socializing with her family and friends, playing cards and going to the casino. She loved shopping and going to yard sales. Hopefully, you were lucky enough to go to a Saturday morning yard sale with her. She was always on the go and often referred to herself as a "street lady". Janie had a special relationship with each individual family member, she loved her family.
Janie leaves to cherish and celebrate her life and memories to, her children, Estellita Daniel (Thomas), Gwendolyn Baldwin, Debbie Martin (Bob), Fannie Miranda (Gilberto, Jr.), Martha Brown, Aamir Muhammad, Antoinette Monroe (Calvin, Sr.); stepchildren, Walter Brown (Shirley) and Frances Styles; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and special friends. She meant so much to so many. She was generous, kind and loving. Her legacy will forever live through her family!
