Obituary

Helen Hattie Coleman gained her wings and went home to be with her heavenly father on July 13, 2023. She was born on May 3, 1927, to the late Hattie Turner Williams and Lafayette Williams.

She joined Second New Hope Baptist Church at an early age. She was educated in Spotsylvania County. Helen was married to the late, James L. Coleman and to this union six children were born.

Anybody who knew Helen, knew she loved for her family to gather in her yard and to listen to music by Marvin Gaye. Her family celebrated her 96th birthday with a party attended by family and friends. She enjoyed the company, specifically the music, as she moved her arms, legs, and feet to the beat.

She was a loving mother, and grandmother that helped to raise some of her grandchildren and often had neighborhood children playing in her yard. Earlier in her life she lived on Slaughter Pen Farm with her parents where she drove tractors and rode horses. She also loved soap operas, especially The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful.

Helen was a homemaker. You could often find her at her parents' home with her sisters. She had a special relationship with her youngest sister, Frances. They were like two peas in a pod. They loved exploring many of the backroads of Virginia by car with great curiosity. Whenever you saw one, you saw the other. She will be truly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lafayette and Hattie Williams; her son, Richard Coleman; grandson, Alvin Coleman; and sisters, Clarice Terrell and Frances Jones.

Helen leaves to cherish her memory, three sons, James Coleman (Pamela), Louis Coleman (Terry), and Robert Coleman (Loretta); two daughters, Dorothy Green, and Loretta Coleman; seventeen grandchildren, Tiffany Coleman, Ramonda Carter, Christi Coleman, Robert Coleman, Jr., Jamie Green, Tracy Jones, Richard Coleman, Jr., Damita Jackson, DeeAnna Keyes, Karon Woodward, Keisha Green, Jaime Coleman, Marshall Woodward, III, Ashley Coleman, Brittany Coleman, Ciara Coleman and Candace Smith; forty great-grandchildren; thirty great-great grandchildren; her sister, Alice Fletcher; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A viewing will be held at Second New Hope Baptist Church, on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 10:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. The interment will be held at Second New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
