Hazel
Gibson
d. Jan 29, 2024
Hazel Beatrice Hunt Gibson , 83, was born to the late James H. Hunt and Elnora Hunt in Caroline County, Virginia on February 24, 1940, and peacefully passed away on January 29, 2024.
Hazel was educated in the Caroline County School System and was a 1959 graduate of Union High School. This is where she met her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Melvyn Allen Gibson.
Hazel and Melvyn were united in marriage on September 4, 1959. Before Hazel and Melvyn's marriage, in August 1955, Melvyn enlisted in the United States Air Force. This allowed him and Hazel to travel the world. To this union, they were blessed with three children when Melvyn was in the military. While stationed at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Delaware, their first child, Melvyn "Magoo" Gibson, Jr. was born. Their second child, Timothy Gibson, was born in Tripoli, Libya (Northern Africa), while stationed at Wheelus Air Base, and their daughter, Sharon "Princess" Gibson, was born in Quantico, Virginia. Hazel and the children also accompanied Melvyn while he was stationed at Hellenikon Air Base in Athens, Greece. They also welcomed Tasheka Gibson, Francine Keyes, and Darryl Scrivens and raised them as their children.
After serving 20 years of serving in the US Air Force, Melvyn retired and he, Hazel, and their family ultimately settled down in Spotsylvania, Virginia where they became members of Macedonia Baptist Church in Woodford, Virginia.
Hazel had various jobs throughout her life. She worked at Southland (now known as McLane) in Stafford, Virginia. She was also employed by Westinghouse in Greensboro, North Carolina, and later in life, she held the position as an assistant manager in the accounting office at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC where she retired after nearly 20 years.
Hazel, affectionately known to some as "Dunk," loved to cook and was known for her delicious rum balls and coconut pineapple cakes. She also had a love for crafting which included crocheting and making ceramics.
She was preceded in death by her parents: James H. Hunt and Elnora Hunt; her brothers James Hunt, Jr. and Leroy Hunt; and her sisters Lorraine Hunt and Annie Hunt.
Hazel was richly blessed to have a wonderful large family whom she loved and adored. She is survived by, Melvyn "Magoo" Gibson, Jr., of Spotsylvania, Virginia Timothy Gibson of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Sharon "Princess" Gibson of Spotsylvania, Virginia, Tasheka Gibson of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Francine Keyes of Ruther Glen, Virginia, and Darrell Scrivens of Waldorf, Maryland: 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Barbara Euell, and a large host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A viewing will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 10:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. The interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery at 1:30 PM.
