Hattie
Johnson
d. Sep 17, 2026
On Thursday, September 17, 2026, Deaconess Emeritus Hattie Mae Johnson was called to the Celestial abode of God, where she now knows healing, blessings and eternal rest.
Hattie was the second of ten children. She was born in Caroline County, Virginia on August 26, 1939, to the late John and Hattie Coleman. She graduated from John J. Wright Consolidated School. She dedicated her life to Christ by joining Mount Hope Baptist Church at an early age, where she served as a Deaconess for many years, member of the Willing Workers Ministry, the Golden Flyers Senior Ministry and the Mount Hope Baptist Church Combined Choir.
Hattie was employed at Hazelwild Day School, as a dietitian, from her teenage years until retirement.
On February 9, 1963, Hattie married William D. Johnson and from this union of 52 years, two children (Doris and William, Jr.) were born.
Hattie was a member of the Mount Hope Bowling Team for 35 years. When she wasn’t bowling at the bowling alley, she was bowling on her tablet. She enjoyed watching and playing along with game shows, especially The Price Is Right, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Another favorite of hers were wordsearch puzzles. She also loved football and was a proud Dallas Cowboy fan. As a member of the Golden Flyers, she was always excited to go whenever they planned a trip.
Hattie leaves a loving legacy to her daughter, Doris Viney, of Spotsylvania, VA; son, William, Jr. (Ritchie) of King George, VA; one grandson, Marcus Viney; four brothers, John, Ernest, Robert, and William Coleman; three sisters, Virginia, Emma and Nellie; three sisters-in-law, Ethel, Willa Mae and Estell; three brothers-in-law, Charles, Albert, and Johnny. Also treasuring her memory, are a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and numerous cousins and friends.
Hattie’s parents, brother, James and sister, Gladys preceded her in death.
Hattie was a truly wonderful, friendly, kind, gracious, and loving person. She touched so many lives and will always be cherished by all.
