Obituary

Gurvis L. Bailey, Jr. , a beloved resident of Orange, Virginia, peacefully departed this life on October 2, 2024, to be with the Lord. Born in Wake County, North Carolina, on January 3, 1943, Gurvis was the youngest of seven children born to the late Margie Landis Bailey and Deacon Gurvis Bailey, Sr. Growing up on a farm in Raleigh, North Carolina, Gurvis embraced spiritual values, garnered practical life skills, and developed an insatiable thirst for knowledge that shaped every chapter of his life.

He accepted Christ at an early age and began working in the church as an usher at Rock Spring United Church of Christ in Creedmoor, North Carolina. By observing his father and each of his brothers work faithfully as deacons and trustees, Gurvis learned to be not only a hearer of the Word but a doer also, as referenced in James 1:22-26.

Gurvis graduated from Garner Consolidated High School in Garner, North Carolina, in 1960, where he actively participated in the Garner Consolidated Band, Boy Scouts, Yearbook Staff, and English Club. One of his fondest high school memories was working as a student bus driver. He often shared vivid stories, with full sound effects, to recall his experiences during that era.

Pursuing his passion for education, Gurvis attended Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1964. He was inducted into the Golden Bronco Society as a 50-year graduate in 2014, and this year marks his 60th year celebration. He began his career with Orange County (Virginia) Public Schools as a 5th grade teacher at Lightfoot Elementary School, four years prior to school integration.

Gurvis enhanced his education through a graduate program at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He earned a Master of Education in 1972 and dedicated 32 years to the profession, 13 years as a teacher and 19 years in various district level administrative roles across Fluvanna, Campbell, and Orange counties in Virginia, He retired as a Special Services Coordinator for the Orange County School System in 1996. During his first year in Orange, Gurvis met Virginia, another new teacher and fellow North Carolinian. Their friendship quickly blossomed into love and the two were married on November 26, 1966. They welcomed the addition of their daughter, Sharon, a few years later.

Gurvis and Virginia further established roots in their adopted hometown of Orange when they became members of Emanuel Baptist Church in 1968. Gurvis was ordained as a deacon in 1975 and served with unwavering commitment for almost 50 years, including a decade as Chairman of the Deacon Board. His involvement extended to serving in the Men's Club, as Sunday School Superintendent, and in various other leadership roles (1 Peter 4:10-11). Notably, Gurvis moderated business activities during the church's pastoral search in the early 2000s and took pride in chairing Emanuel's Centennial Celebration in 2010, alongside his dear friend, Trustee Howard Ware. The team spearheaded the production of a commemorative journal chronicling the first 100 years of Emanuel's rich history.

Gurvis loved working in the church, and with his passion for learning, he devoted many hours to reading and studying the Bible, (2 Timothy 2:15). He was honored by the late Reverend Charles D. Davenport as Man of the Year in 1992 and Deacon of the Year in 1995 at Emanuel Baptist Church. Gurvis cherished the many friendships he cultivated, both at Emanuel and through visiting churches throughout the region.

He also had a great love for the outdoors, finding joy in gardening and utilizing his farming background to create bountiful gardens. Gurvis was honored to be appointed by the Orange County Board of Supervisors to serve on the regional Community Services Board that was comprised of five counties collaborating to advocate to improve the quality of life for people with mental health or substance use disorders, and intellectual disabilities. This paired well with his role as an instructor and administrator focusing on educating students with special needs.

Gurvis is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Bailey Bryant; and four brothers, Thomas E., James H., Onest L., and Carlie W. Bailey.

He leaves in fond remembrance his wife of 58 years, Virginia Bailey of Orange; his daughter, Sharon Bailey Johnson; and two wonderful grandsons, Ronnie and Malik Johnson of Fredericksburg, Virginia.
