Gladys
West
d. Jan 17, 2026
Dr. Gladys B. West , a pioneering mathematician, devoted public servant, and faithful woman of God, was born in 1930 in Sutherland, Virginia, and spent her formative years in Dinwiddie County. She was one of four children born to Nolan and Macy Brown, who instilled in her the values of hard work, perseverance, and faith. From an early age, Dr. West understood the transformative power of education and resolved to build a future beyond the fields in which her parents labored. Her determination earned her valedictorian honors of her high school class and a full scholarship to Virginia State College (now Virginia State University).
Dr. West graduated from Virginia State with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1952 and a Master of Science in Mathematics in 1955. Her passion for learning continued throughout her life, culminating in a Master of Public Administration from the University of Oklahoma in 1973 and a PhD in Public Administration from Virginia Tech in 2000—an extraordinary achievement accomplished while working full time and surviving a major stroke. Her academic journey was a testament to her favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
In 1956, Dr. West began her historic career at the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory in Dahlgren, Virginia (now Naval Support Facility Dahlgren). As the second Black woman hired at the base—and the fourth Black employee—she broke barriers with quiet excellence. During 42 years of service, she rose through the ranks to become a supervisory mathematician and project manager, making groundbreaking contributions to satellite geodesy and the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Her work helped refine the accuracy of satellite data that now underpins technologies from smartphones to navigation systems in cars and aircraft, used daily around the world.
Dr. West played a critical role in major satellite programs, including GEOS-3, GEOSAT, and SEASAT, and authored influential technical publications that advanced the Navy's and Department of Defense's understanding of geodetic measurements. In recognition of her contributions, she received numerous honors, including the Award of Merit for Group Achievement from the Department of the Navy. Later in life, her legacy gained global recognition, with international interviews, public honors, academic speaking engagements, and recognition from her beloved Sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she enjoyed 75 years of membership and was recently recognized as a Diamond member. She became a member of AKA while a student at Virginia State and was a Charter member of her present chapter of the sorority, Xi Upsilon Omega in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where she served as Treasurer from 1983 to 1986. She has received Honorary Doctorates from Virginia State University and the University of Oklahoma. Her accolades include a Virginia Senate Joint Resolution (2018), Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame Induction (2018), BBC 100 Women (2018), HBCU Digest Female Alumna of the Year (2018), Strong Men & Women in Virginia History honoree, Library of Virginia and Dominion Energy (2019), Dinwiddie County Board of Supervisors Resolution (2019), the prestigious Prince Philip Medal from the Royal Academy of Engineering (2021), the Webby Lifetime Achievement Award (2021), added to the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Walk of Fame in Washington, DC. (2022), Freedom of the Seas Exploration and Innovation Award (2023), The National Museum of the Surface Navy Freedom of the Seas Exploration and Innovation Award (2023), and the Surface Navy Association Hall of Fame (2024). The most recent recognition which was very dear to her heart is a school named in her honor, the Gladys West Elementary School in Fredericksburg, VA (2024). She also published her memoir, "It Began with A Dream", co-written with M. H. Jackson in 2020.
Dr. West was an inspiration who overcame racism, gender inequality, and systemic barriers without complaint—leading instead with humility, grace, and unwavering faith. Her ability to navigate diverse spaces with wisdom and compassion, advocate for important political and social issues, and quietly evangelize through her actions made her a powerful role model. Her faith was not merely spoken but lived—seen in her willingness to pray for others, speak openly about God's presence in her life, and embody Christian values daily.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. West was a devoted wife, proud mother, beloved grandmother, mentor, and community leader. She shared 67 years of marriage with her devoted husband, Ira West, a fellow retired mathematician from Dahlgren, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Joseph Brown Sr., (Doris) and Nolan Brown Jr. (Evelyn), and her sister, Dr. Annie B. Hankins (Rev. Dr. Lanksford Hankins Sr.). She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Carolyn Oglesby (Barry), two sons, David West (Colleen), and Michael West (Lisa), seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dr. Gladys B. West's life stands as a blueprint for excellence, resilience, and service. Intelligent, kind, loyal, and steadfast, she leaves behind a legacy that will continue to guide future generations in science, education, and faith.
