Obituary

George Stephen Gordon Johnson transitioned peacefully to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at the Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center in Spotsylvania, Virginia with family at his bedside. He was born on June 21, 1949, to the late George and Sallie Johnson in Woodford (Guinea), Virginia.

The oldest of "My 3 Sons", Lil John/Johnny Boy as he was affectionally known to most and "George" to the other half of his heart, granddaughter Avery, was educated in the Caroline County Public School System and graduated from Union High School in 1967.

After graduating from High School, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving his Country honorably for four years. At an early age, he was baptized under the pastor-ate of the late Rev. Dr. S. H. Carter and joined First Baptist Church of Woodford (Guinea), Virginia.

As a young man, he attended Sunday School, BTU, sang in the church choir, and participated in church plays.

He was also a member of the Jubilee Majestic Ensemble, under the leadership of the late Sister Carrie Jackson Garnett, where he could be heard singing "One Day at a Time" as a duet with the late Eddie Garnett. Among his favorite songs was "I'm Giving My Life to Christ".

He was joined in holy matrimony to his devoted wife, Joyce Lewis Johnson, on November 27, 1982. From this union his first pride and joy, Ashley Nicole, was born. His second pride and joy was granddaughter little Miss Avery Campbell who could win his heart through any situation. He had a passion for mechanical work, especially taking vehicles down and putting them back together again. Many looked to him for advice on numerous mechanical issues and his skills served many family and friends well. After retiring, the highlight of George's day was caring for Avery; getting together with his brothers at his garage working on vehicles, and enjoying the company of his close friends, Frankie French, Michael B. Carter, Richard Parker and Charles Newbill. He was an avid Solitaire card player and enjoyed watching YouTube videos so that he could stay up-to-date on the latest mechanical techniques. He was employed by the Federal Government and worked at Marine Corps Base Quantico as a heavy equipment operator until he retired after 38 years.

George was predeceased by his parents, George and Sallie Johnson; grandparents, God- mother, Mrs. Carrie Jackson; uncles and aunts and one brother-in-law, Arthur Lewis.

He leaves to rejoice in his memory and legacy his wife, Joyce Lewis Johnson; daughter, Ashley J. Campbell; son in-law, Antwane Campbell; granddaughter, Avery Campbell; grand-dog, Ace, all of Woodford, Virginia; two brothers, Howard Bradley Johnson, and Deacon Kenneth Johnson (Linette) of Woodford, Virginia; his raised as a "sister", Veronica Ackers (Ralph) of Fredericksburg, Virginia; one uncle, Philip Young of Middletown, Rhode Island; two aunts, Marian Cannon of Florence, Alabama, and Reverend Diana Cherry of Clinton, Maryland; three sisters-in-law, Rita Bundy of Stafford, Virginia, Carolyn Davidson of Sun City, Florida, and Colleen Hesson (Rev.
