Ernestine
Glover
d. Nov 13, 2025
Ernestine Barr Glover , a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, educator, and faithful servant of God, entered eternal rest after a long life marked by grace, devotion, and love. She was born on August 8, 1927, in Kingstree, South Carolina, to Nelson Barr and Beanie Pressley Barr.
Ernestine graduated from Tomlinson High School in 1945 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Claflin University in 1949. Deeply committed to education, she began her career at Andrews Elementary School in Andrews, South Carolina. In 1950, she married Jacob Glover and later moved to Long Island City, Queens.
While teaching pre-school at Western Queens Nursery School and raising 5 children, Ernestine went back to school and earned her Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Hunter College in 1976. She retired from teaching in 1989, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, patience, and excellence in the countless lives she touched. Following her retirement, Ernestine relocated to Connecticut, where she continued to give of herself as a foster grandparent at St. Lawrence Catholic School, assisting teachers and nurturing students for more than a decade.
Ernestine's greatest joy was serving the Lord. In her former church, People's United Methodist Church in New York, she founded the first junior choir, taught Sunday School, organized the Methodist Youth Fellowship, and sang in the choir. As a member of Varick Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in New Haven, Connecticut, she continued her faithful work by teaching Sunday School and serving on the Deaconess Board. She also delighted in life's simple gifts like walking, gardening, enjoying a day at the beach, singing, and playing the piano.
Ernestine leaves to cherish her memory her five children: Jacob Glover, Jr., James Glover (Sandra), Gloria Greenidge (Cyril), Brenda Hines (Daniel), and Melody Glover; six beloved grandchildren: Ayanna (Neil), Jasmine (Orock), Dara (Scott), Jamaal, Jaraad, and Jameson; and five precious great-grandchildren: Omari, Malcolm, Elliotte, Amelie, and Ariya. She is also survived by her brother Nelson Barr, Jr. (Volena), and a loving extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Glover, Sr. and her sisters, Margaret James, Catherine Johnson, Mildred Adamson, Ethel McDonald, Willie Bernitha Thompkins, and Patsy Burgess.
Ernestine's life was a gift rich in faith, generous in service, and overflowing with love for her family.
