Ernest
Morton
d. Oct 28, 2023
Ernest Floyd Morton peacefully departed this earthly life on Saturday, October 28, 2023. He was surrounded by his beloved family and other loved ones.
Ernest was born the eighth of nine children to Amos M. and Hannah V. Morton on March 3, 1944, in Stafford, VA. He was educated in Stafford County, attending the segregated H.H. Poole High School in the early sixties. After high school, Ernest worked a few odd jobs, eventually settling into a career in the construction industry as a Laborer – a career that spanned more than 45 years and brought him great joy and fond memories. He would often speak of the many road and building projects that he was a part of around Northern Virginia (expanding both I-95 and Rt. 1, building up Crystal City in Arlington, VA, being part of construction crews that built many edifices in Northern Virginia and Washington, DC, etc., etc.). He shifted from construction work to owning his own dump truck and was the sole proprietor of E&T Hauling for several years. The latter part of his career was spent as a truck driver with Roper Brothers until his retirement. Ernest was a hard worker, with an extremely strong work ethic, often boasting of working several consecutive years without missing a day of work.
Ernest was raised in Mt. Hope Baptist Church in Brooke, VA, and was baptized under Pastor Edward Smith. In 1987, he joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Fredericksburg, VA, where he served as Chairman of the Trustee Board for several years, sang in the Men's Chorus and provided janitorial support around the church in his retirement years.
Ernest was a strong family man – family was his heart's greatest pride and joy. He was the "Baby Boy" among his siblings and often benefitted from spoiling by his five older sisters. He honored and cared for both of his parents (along with his siblings) until their deaths. He was a beloved Granddaddy and Pop-Pop, the favorite uncle of many nieces and nephews, a favorite and dear friend to many and respected and regarded as an all-around good man. However, to be clear, he was not to be played with and his reminiscing of younger years often included stories of his more "spirited" interactions with those who challenged him or his family. If you know, you know.
Ernest is preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice Morton; a son, Floyd Christian Morton; his parents, Amos & Hannah Morton; his sisters, Louise Montague, Audrey Montague, Ruth Bennett, Theresa Durham, and Blanche Adams; and his brother Amos Morton.
Ernest leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 35 years, Trenita L. Morton; his children, Linda Morton, Angelo "Fon" Morton, Loretta Morton and LaWanda Morton-Chunn; his stepchildren, Ronnette Parks, Ronnie Poole, Jr., and Anthony Poole; his sons-in-law, Derrick Parks and Russell Chunn; his grandchildren, Quinton Morton, Qi'Ana Nunn, Christopher Morton, Lee Nunn, DeWan Morton, Sharquita Parks, Sharniece Parks, Sharkira Parks and LaQuann Foster (honorable mention Tyler and Brandon Chunn); his great-grandchildren Jah'Vari, Jai'Lin, Chloe, MeiKhi, Caleesa, Ryleigh, Nai'Loni and Zymeir (honorable mention, Bailey, Luke, Brandie, Jesse, Brianna, and Brooklynn); his sister, Marie Truslow and his brother, Norman Morton; his brothers-in-law, Bernard Davidson (Dorothy), Robert Davidson, Jr. (Cathy), Orlando Davidson (Jennifer), Larry Braxton (Donna), Alfred Howard and Walter Howard; his sister-in-Law, Colette Ellis (Jim); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other loved ones, to include dear cousins Clark "Bootsie" Whiting and Pearl Martin and his lifelong best friend, Gary Mercer, to name just a few.
A viewing will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home on Friday, November 3, 2023, at 10:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Click here to access a live streaming of the funeral service.
