Obituary

Edward Gary Mercer was born on April 22, 1942, to the late Reverend Edward William Mercer and Lucille Clarke Mercer in Stafford County. On Saturday, April 11, 2026, he peacefully transitioned at Richmond VA Medical Center.

Gary, a man of quiet strength, enduring resilience, and historic significance, passed away surrounded by the love of family and community. His life stands as a powerful testament to courage, service, craftsmanship, and the pursuit of equity.

Gary made history as one of the five students who attempted to integrate Stafford County Public Schools in 1961. During a time when such actions required immense bravery, he stepped forward along with his four classmates with dignity and determination—helping to open doors that had long been closed. His role in this pivotal moment contributed to eventual lasting change, paving the way for generations of students to learn in more inclusive and equitable environments. His legacy is honored through a beautiful mural displayed at the Rowser Building and Edward E. Drew middle school, recognizing his role in this important chapter of history.

Gary proudly served his country in the United States Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. His service reflected his deep commitment to duty, honor, and country. Following his military service, he remained dedicated to his fellow servicemen and women through his involvement with the American Legion Post 142 and Post 55 serving as a former Post Commander and 12th District Commander where he valued fellowship, service, and community connection.

A skilled and dedicated carpenter by trade, Gary took immense pride in his work. His craftsmanship was a reflection of his character—strong, precise, and enduring. Not only did he build a home for his own family, but he also used his gifts to build homes for friends and family members, leaving behind a tangible legacy of care, generosity, and excellence. He volunteered his carpentry skills for the community humanitarian program "Christmas in July" for families in need. Through his hands, he created homes filled with love, stability, and lasting memories.

Gary was also an avid hunter and fisherman who found joy and peace in the outdoors. Each year, as soon as hunting season opened, he was ready—continuing a tradition that reflected his patience, discipline, and deep appreciation for nature. He enjoyed taking disabled veterans out to hunt during the season. As a proud member of the King George Viking Hunting Club, he shared camaraderie, stories, and countless memorable moments with fellow outdoorsmen.

Gary was known for his humility, integrity, and quiet leadership. He was a steady and trusted presence among family, friends, and neighbors—someone who believed in doing what was right, working diligently, and uplifting others along the way.

He is survived by his loving daughters, Janine Maloney (Raymond), Saundra Mercer, Deanna Barbour, stepmother, Pauline Mercer, siblings, Marian Allen, Johney Mercer, Rachel Perkins (Jamel), and Gwendolyn Reid (RaShun); and a host of loving grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by his lifelong friend Sherman White. His legacy continues through them and the many lives he touched.

Gary was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce Mercer; his daughter, Monique Mercer Coleman; his father, Reverend Edward William Mercer; his mother, Lucille Clarke Mercer; his sister Barbara Adams; and his brother, Christopher Mercer.

Edward Gary Mercer, leaves behind a legacy rooted in history, strengthened through service, and carried forward through love, family, and community. His life's impact will continue to echo in the pathways he helped open and the lives he helped shape.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
