Obituary

On Wednesday, April 1, 2026, as the gates of Heaven opened wide and the angels rejoiced, God, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, gently reached down, took Delphine S. Nelson by the hand, and called His beloved child home to eternal rest. Surrounded by the love of her family, she answered that call and entered sweet peace.

Delphine Susan Nelson, affectionately known as "Phinney", was born on September 14, 1962, in Stafford, Virginia, to the late Deacon Edgar A. Nelson and Deaconess Fannie V. Nelson. From a young age, she radiated warmth, kindness, and a joyful spirit that would become her signature throughout her life. She was educated in the Stafford County Public School System and proudly graduated from Stafford Senior High School, Class of 1980.

Following graduation, Delphine began her professional journey with Stafford County Public Schools, and shortly thereafter, she embarked on a dedicated and fulfilling 30-year career with Safeway, beginning in 1982. There, she formed lasting relationships, bringing smiles to coworkers and customers alike. Even after retirement, her strong work ethic led her to briefly serve at Walmart and Lowe's, continuing to connect with those around her.

Delphine accepted Christ at the tender age of 13 at Mount Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Cecil E. Rhodes. Her faith remained a guiding light throughout her life. She actively participated in church life as a member of the Rosebuds, the Sunlight Choir, and the Social Committee, always serving with a willing heart and joyful spirit.

Delphine was known for her vibrant personality, her radiant smile, her infectious laughter, and her unwavering love for others. She found joy in cooking meals that brought family together, cheering faithfully for the Dallas Cowboys, and sharing in what many lovingly called her "phone ministry." She stayed deeply connected, reaching out with calls and texts to check on loved ones, uplift spirits, and keep everyone informed. Her presence was felt near and far, and her love knew no distance.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Deacon Edgar A. Nelson and Deaconess Fannie V. Nelson; her older sister, Barbara Y. Nelson-Hill; her stepmother, Deaconess Rosabea A. Nelson; her paternal grandparents, Deacon William P. and Judith E. Nelson; and her maternal grandparents, Deacon Robert J. and Deaconess Lucille Hawkins.

Nevertheless, her legacy of love, laughter, and faith will forever live on in those who knew and loved her. Delphine leaves to cherish her precious memories: her brother, Kenneth (Fredia) Nelson of Stafford, Virginia; her devoted twin sister, Daphne Nelson of Stafford, Virginia; her stepbrother, Earl (Michelle) Simpson of Lorton, Virginia; and her stepsister, Iris (Gregory) Sawyer of Virginia Beach, Virginia. She is also lovingly remembered by her nephews, Rodney Hill and Coy (Joy) Nelson, both of Stafford, Virginia; her niece, Nakeia Nelson of Fredericksburg, Virginia; along with three great-nephews, four great-nieces, and five great-great-nieces. She also leaves behind her dear aunt, Madeline Brown of Stafford, Virginia; her uncle, Ralph (Janice) Hawkins of Stafford, Virginia; and a host of cousins, extended family, and friends who will miss her dearly.

Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice in the blessed assurance that she has received her crown and now rests safely in the arms of our Lord. Her beautiful spirit, loving heart, and joyful presence will remain with us always.

"Well done, thou good and faithful servant…enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." – Matthew 25:23
