Celebrating the Life and Legacy of

Deaconess Geneva Parker Baker, "Granny"

"Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return to God Who gave it" (Ecclesiastes 12:7). Deaconess Geneva Parker Baker, "Granny" , was welcomed home by the Lord on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at her residence in Ruther Glen, VA, after 98 years of being blessed by Him.

Our Mom's earthly journey began on Thursday, April 24, 1924. She was born the 6th out of 13 children to the late Murray and Belle Standard Parker in Stafford, VA. She was educated in Stafford County Public Schools. At 15, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. Later, she was baptized and joined Mount Olive Baptist Church, Stafford, VA, under the late Pastor William Harry.

On Tuesday, March 13, 1945, she married the love of her life, the late Deacon Lloyd Curtis Baker (the son of the late Dansberry, Sr., and Sallie Chew Baker) from Bakerstown. They were married for 67 years. From this union, they were blessed with six beautiful children: Curtis, Susie, Genevinia, Romaine, Marvis, and Antonio.

She joined Macedonia Baptist Church, Woodford, VA, under the late Pastor Milton Johnson. Some years later, under the late Pastor William Brown, Mom was consecrated as a deaconess. She was a member of the Senior Choir and the Missionary Ministry. She taught Sunday school, and her students described her as "the best teacher ever." From 1967 to 1978, she was appointed as the first female Superintendent of Sunday school, fulfilling her assignment for 11 years. Also, she was the fitness instructor for the ladies-only classes.

From 1963 to 1986, she was employed by the Navy Relief Society in Quantico, VA, and retired after 23 years. In 1979, Mom and Dad enrolled in the Continuing Adult Education classes at Caroline High School and received their Certificate of Completion.

In 1982, they organized the Community Helping Hand Club to support their neighbors with debt relief. They were recognized for their involvement in the community in the 12th edition of the Personalities of the South. In March 1995, they renewed their 50th Wedding Anniversary vows in the presence of loved ones. When their son, Antonio M. Baker, Sr., was selected as Third Mount Zion Baptist Church's (TMZ) pastor in 1997, they were the first to show their support and join TMZ.

No flower can lift someone's spirits like sunflowers, as bright, warm, and inviting as the summer sun. The sunflowers were Mom's favorite; their characteristics remind us of her. She truly loved her family unconditionally. She covered us and called out our names in her daily prayers. Most importantly, she taught us to love, trust, and worship our Heavenly Father. While we continue our earthly journey, we will remember what Mom always said, "You got to go home, and it is all good." We are confident to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8). Our Mom's spirit is at home and resting peacefully in the arms of Jesus.

Granny was preceded by her husband, Deacon Lloyd Curtis Baker; her oldest son, Brother Curtis Edward Baker; her grandsons, DeVaughn Edward Baker, and Joseph Baker; son-in-law, Brother William Major Fisher; and other loved ones.
