Corey Cook,
Sr.
d. Jul 29, 2023
Corey Lee Roosevelt Cook, Sr. , 32, of Spotsylvania, VA, departed this life on July 29, 2023. Corey was affectionately called "Tiny" by his parents.
Corey had a playful, fun-loving, magnetic personality that drew people to him. He also had a big, beautiful smile that could instantly brighten others' day. Corey is, and will forever be, deeply missed by his children, family and friends.
Corey was born on March 8, 1991 to Hollie Lee Cook, Jr. and Felecia Barrett Cook. He attended Woodbridge and Fredericksburg City Schools before earning his GED from Spotsylvania County Schools. Corey completed his first year at Germanna Community College, then went on to work a variety of jobs in the construction and food industries.
Corey's real passion was music, and he was both an aspiring artist and a visionary. He dreamed of success as an independent artist, as well as starting a trucking company with his brother Antwoine to honor their late father's memory.
Corey adored his family and never missed an opportunity to express his unconditional love for them. Corey also loved his friends and community.
He made it a point to never part ways or end a conversation without saying, "I love you". Even after a disagreement, Corey had a special way of easing any tension by flashing his signature million- dollar smile, and then saying or doing something to make everyone laugh. Corey cherished his parents and he spoke openly about his love and gratitude for them. He was a "Daddy's boy", but loved his mother deeply and referred to her as his "A1 from Day 1". She referred to him as her "third heartbeat". The baby of his family, Corey admired and looked up to all of his older siblings. Due to their closeness in age, his big brother, Antwoine, was his first best friend. From day one, the two were inseparable and usually referred to as "Antwoine and Corey" – because whenever you saw one, the other was always close behind. Corey's favorite food was macaroni and cheese. His favorite meals were the ones his mother or his sister, Ebony, cooked for him. Corey loved basketball and was a lifelong Pokémon fan. His favorite past-time, however, was playing and spending time with his children. Corey also loved being an uncle, and had special bonds with his nieces and nephews.
Corey was introduced to the Lord at an early age and carried his faith in God with him throughout his life. No matter the obstacle, Corey remained steadfast in his belief that God would take care of him. As a child and teenager, Corey attended Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site) and served in the youth ministry for several years. This tight-knit ministry created several lifelong friendships, and reinforced the importance of community and volunteerism. As an adult, Corey attended Rhema Christian Ministries.
Corey had a big heart and a genuine, compassionate spirit. He took the time to acknowledge the humanity of those whom others might look past. Corey would give his last, if it meant making someone else's burden a little lighter. Corey was an exceptionally talented lyricist who wrote, produced and performed his own music, often in collaboration with his brother, Antwoine. Corey poured his heart and soul into his craft, and many of his creative works serve as open letters about his triumphs, struggles, hopes and dreams. In addition to being a loving son, brother, uncle and father, Corey was also a resilient warrior who battled mental illness and addiction for many years. Even on the dark days, Corey believed that no weapon formed against him would prosper. His faith never wavered, and he fought long and hard to be present with the people he loved most. Corey never stopped believing in the power of prayer, and those closest to him knew that he would pray whenever and wherever he felt led to do so. Corey hoped to one day open a non- profit with his mother to help those struggling with their mental health. In this same spirit of healing, his family hopes that Corey's story will inspire those still struggling to keep fighting, and to seek out the resources and support necessary to be victorious.
Corey's message was always one about love. His family finds comfort in knowing that through his close personal relationship with God and his unyielding faith, he was able to experience the greatest love of all.
Corey is preceded in death by his father, Hollie Lee Cook, Jr., brother, Hollie Lee Cook III, maternal grandparents Roosevelt and Lula Mae Barrett (who helped raise him) and paternal grandparents Bishop Hollie and Mary Cook, Sr.
He leaves to cherish his memory and continue his legacy, his five children that were his heartbeats, Josiah Tay'von Washington-Cook, Jayvion De'Angelo Minor, Jeremiah Lee Washington-Cook, Corey Lee Roosevelt Cook, Jr., and Amiyah Lynn Felecia Cook; his beloved mother, Felecia Barrett Cook; sisters, Ebony Lewis and Shalisa Cook; brothers, Antwoine Cook, Sr., and Calvin Jackson; the mothers of his children and his lifelong friends, Porche Washington, Shawntoya Minor, and Janell Ellis; nieces, Tyasia Snell, Danisa Cook, Tylecia Lewis, and Alicia Cook; nephews, Christopher Lewis, Jr., Iman Cook, Rayshaun Lewis, Antwoine Cook, Jr., and Atreus Cook; bonus daughter, Natalia Washington and bonus son, Zahcari Ellis; godmother, Yvette Jones; fur-brother Sam Cook; and a host of other treasured aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
A viewing will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site), 801 Sophia Street, Fredericksburg, VA, on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at 10 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11 AM. The interment will be held privately.
