Obituary

On June 2, 1948, Clyde Eugene Rollins was born to Frank Rollins, Sr. and Martha Minor Rollins. He was the youngest of six children, which included Henry "Boots" Rollins, Mary Rollins, Jeanne Ellis, Frances Smith, and Frank Rollins, Jr. They lived in Slabtown until they moved to the countryside of Spotsylvania.

Clyde had a wonderful personality – he never met a stranger.  He would pick up a conversation with anyone, and they would walk away smiling.

Clyde was a 1966 graduate of John J. Wright Consolidated High School. He had a love of science, which he passed on to his daughter. After graduating, Clyde enlisted in the United States Army in July of 1968, and completed his basic training at Fort Benning, GA. Soon after, he would enter the Vietnam War from December 1968 to December 1969 with the MACV Team 19, fighting for our country. He was with the U.S. Military Assistance Command and was a specialist. While in the army, Clyde became a Drill Sergeant, and was an expert marksman. One day, while paratrooping, Clyde suffered an injury and was medically discharged in 1971. He was very proud to have been a veteran and he shared many stories of his time in the service.

When he returned home, he reconnected with his future wife, Roganna Howard. They knew each other from when they were children and had gone to school together. Eventually, they fell in love, and on June 24, 1979, they were married. They shared such a happy and joyous life together. Their family was complete when their daughter Amanda Rachelle Rollins was born into this world in May 1981. God blessed this marriage for over 34 years until Roganna lost her battle with cancer in 2014.

After the army, Clyde started a career with the United States Postal Service in June of 1974. He worked at the Fredericksburg Post Office, where he was one of the first black window clerks hired. He then moved to the Falmouth branch, both the old and new buildings. At the old building, he built a strong reputation, where he was beloved by many of his customers. He then moved to the new post office on route 17, where he took on many financial responsibilities. He eventually took a much deserved retirement in 2012 after working for 38 years.

Clyde's faith was a constant throughout his life.  He was baptized young at Second New Hope Baptist Church. Later, he became a proud and faithful member of the Little Mine Road Baptist Church family where he served as a Trustee, Financial Secretary, and Missionary President. Whenever there was something to be done, Clyde would step up and take on any task. Music and singing were also an important part of his life. On many a Sunday you would also find him in the choir stand, where his clear baritone would resonate throughout the church.

Clyde will be remembered for many things – his love of bowling – he was very proud of bowling a perfect game, his singing – he was a member of the group "The Redeemed Men", and later after retirement he picked up the game of golf. He was very active, being a mainstay at church, being a role model for many, and spending much quality time with his daughter – whether it was going to lunch, playing cards, or just taking a ride together. She was blessed to have such a great father – there was none better.

On Wednesday, December 26, 2023, while Clyde was a patient at Mary Washington Hospital, God sent his angels to bring him home to heaven, where he would reunite with the love of his life, his mother and father, and the brother and sisters that had passed before him.

To cherish his memories, he has left behind his only child, Amanda Rollins; a brother, Frank Rollins, Sr.; a brother-in-law, Arthur Smith; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Rollins and Roberta Rollins, a special first cousin, Edith Washington; a special niece, Lyndorah Ellis; longtime friends, Samuel Coleman, and Thomas Johnson; a special "son", Ray Searles; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

A viewing will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home on Friday, January 5, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour before the funeral service. A funeral service will be held at Little Mine Road Baptist Church, 7225 Lanes Corner Road, Spotsylvania, VA, 22551, on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 12:00 PM. The interment will follow at Little Mine Road Baptist Church Cemetery.
