Obituary

Calvin W. Whiting

September 5, 1987 - September 26, 2020

Calvin William Whiting transitioned to be with our heavenly father on September 26, 2020 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA.

Calvin was born to Wesley Whiting, Sr. and Dora "Chippy" Whiting on September 5, 1987 in Fredericksburg, VA. He grew up in Stafford, VA with his two brothers and sister as well as a host of other aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition to his parents, his maternal and paternal grandparents played a huge role in his upbringing and early childhood. As a young boy, Calvin was fearless and mischievous, but his grandparents helped keep him on track.

While attending Brooke Point High School, he joined the basketball team and spent time fishing, hunting, working on cars and working in a barber shop. He graduated from high school in 2005, but he already had his life planned when he decided to join the Army Reserves in 2004. Calvin started his career as an Aviation Operations Specialist for the Army Reserves. He was called to active duty in 2007 and served a one-year deployment in Iraq as part of Iraqi Freedom. After deployment, he continued to serve in the Army National Guard until separating in 2012. He didn't talk much about his career in the military, however, while serving, he earned the following awards: Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and a Defense Service Medal.

In September 2003, Calvin met the love of his life, April Fields. After years of courting, they were joined in

holy matrimony on July 17, 2010. Of this union, two children were born, Aliya Jordan Whiting and Jordan Calvin Whiting. In 2013, Calvin and his new family returned to his childhood roots on Porter Hill Road in Stafford, VA. Shortly after, his family grew by two as his niece, Me'Kyla Rae Whiting and nephew, Dashawn Maurice Carter were welcomed into their home. This completed his family of six along with his best friend, Sophie the Porter Hill dog. Sadly, Sophie passed away in July 2020.

Calvin was a devoted husband and loving father. He enjoyed showing up at the kids sporting events, taking them fishing or to the race tracks and going on family vacations. April was his best friend and perfect match. Together they enjoyed driving around the countryside, fishing and just hanging out in the garage with family and friends.

"The Garage" became the hang-out spot. Calvin celebrated life, told stories, made jokes, played cards, ate crabs and he loved cooking on the grill and frying fish, almost every weekend. It was also the place on Sunday mornings where Calvin tuned into 96.3 WHUR to listen to the Gospel Spirit.

When he wasn't in the garage, he was either fixing something, washing his truck, checking on his plants, or watering his grass. Calvin was truly an outside man and never sat down. In 2009, along with his father (his partner in crime), he started his own business, Whiting Professional Landscaping Services which later became Whiting's Ground Maintenance. Later Calvin joined Sunningdale Meadows as a Grounds Maintenance Assistant, a job he truly loved.

He wasn't the type of man you could get mushy with, however he had a huge heart and showed his love in other ways, often by cracking jokes and showing up when you needed him the most. He had a personality like no other and made all who were around him feel comfortable and loved.

Calvin exemplified pride. His love for "Michael Jordan" started as a child, writing letters to the superstar and it even spilled over into his children's names, and is currently displayed all throughout his garage. He took the time with much precision to frame all his "MJ" jerseys in every professional sport that MJ played. If you lived in the Whiting's home, you had no choice but to place a Jordan logo on the back of your car.

Calvin was a great man, loving husband, devoted father, loyal son and a combat Army Veteran. He will truly be loved and remembered forever.

Preceding Calvin in death were his paternal grandparents, William and Okie Whiting, maternal grandfather, Calhoun Berryman and cousin, Dale "G-Man" Ghee Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, April Whiting; daughters, Aliya Whiting and Me'Kyla Whiting; sons, Jordan Whiting and Dashawn Carter; parents, Wesley and Dora Whiting; sister, Kimonita Reid (Stacy); brothers, Wesley Whiting, Jr. and Alfonso Reid (Martina); maternal grandmother, Carrie Berryman; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
