Obituary

Barbara Elizabeth Bumbrey entered eternal rest on February 5, 2026, at the golden age of 80 years.

Barbara was the eleventh of twelve children of the late Roland and Clara Williams. She was born on March 25, 1945, in Culpeper, VA. She was baptized at a young age at Mount Holy Baptist Church, in True Blue, VA, and later joined Shiloh Baptist Church (New Site) in Fredericksburg, VA.

In 1963, she graduated from George Washington Carver Regional High School in Rapidan, VA, where she participated in basketball, cheerleading, several clubs and organizations. Upon graduation, Barbara married Marcellus Bumbrey, her high school sweetheart, on July 4, 1965. They relocated to Fredericksburg where they raised their three children and had 60 years of love, laughter, strength, and unwavering partnership. They built a lifetime of love and a legacy that will live on forever.

Barbara held several jobs and had a dedicated and loyal work ethic. Throughout her career, she worked at P&D Automotive, Mary Washington College, and Fredericksburg City Public Schools.

She was a woman who carried herself with grace, laughter, and unmistakable style. She believed in always looking good, hair always done, nails neatly polished, and clothes perfectly pressed. Presentation mattered to Barbara, not out of vanity, but because she took pride in herself and the life she lived.

Barbara found her greatest joy in shopping and spending time with family and friends, especially when there were crabs on the table. She enjoyed playing "deuces" and was so competitive that she never wanted the night to end. Her favorite saying was "one more, one more, one more" when everyone else was exhausted and ready for bed. She loved a good laugh and had a special gift for turning any gathering into a moment worth remembering. Her presence brought warmth, humor, and comfort to those around her.

She deeply loved R&B music and found peace and inspiration in Sunday morning gospel on WHUR, 96.3. Those same sounds often set the rhythm for her favorite pastimes that included dancing and cleaning. Whether she was moving to the music or keeping her space just right, Barbara turned everyday moments into expressions of joy, pride, and care.

Barbara enjoyed her quiet moments as much as her lively ones. She found comfort in sitting on her front porch, reading her Bible, challenging herself with word searches, and savoring her favorite meal, Popeyes fried chicken and fries. She also loved watching her favorite soap operas and TV shows that included All My Children, One Life to Live, General Hospital, Young and the Restless, Price is Right and WWE wrestling.

She treasured staying connected with the people she loved. She enjoyed talking on the phone with her siblings, spending hours catching up, sharing laughs and planning the next family event. She cherished the time spent talking on the phone with her devoted friend, Phyllis Byrd (Ronald) whose friendship was filled with loyalty, laughter, and meaningful conversation, along with good food.

Barbara's life was one of faith, love, joy and perseverance. She lived fully, loved deeply and left an enduring mark on all who were blessed to know her. She left behind wonderful memories as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Barbara was preceded in death by brothers, Franklin Williams, Roland Williams, Norman Williams, and Sherman Williams; sisters, Pauline Wise, Marie Williams, Lillian Brown, and Ann Alexander.

Barbara leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband, Marcellus Bumbrey; two sons, Julian Bumbrey, Sr. (Andrea), and Derick Bumbrey; one daughter, Petrina Barnett (James); ten grandchildren, Shylan Matthews (Joe), Lauren Magruder (Eric), Jaamir Bumbrey (Emily), Julian Bumbrey, Jr., Danielle Bumbrey, James Barnett II, Janae Winston, Takiah Barnett, Jayden Bumbrey, and Dakayla Bumbrey; eight great grandchildren, Daylen Bumbrey, Daxton Hutson, Brandon Matthews, Brock Matthews, Logan Magruder, Eric Magruder II, Zaamir Bumbrey, and Jayven Bumbrey; two sisters, Rena Reaves and Viola Brent; one brother, Lester Williams; one sister-in-law, Patricia Bumbrey-Moore; one brother-in-law, Dennis Shafe; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives, and friends.

Barbara's race is now complete, and her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family and friends. As we remember the story of her life, we should be reminded of the words of the great Apostle Paul who stated, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith". 2 Timothy 4:7
