Obituary

Alton Wadell Moore departed this life on May 19, 2023, at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, VA surrounded by his family. Alton (affectionally called "Mutt" by family and close friends) was born in Chesapeake, VA on September 2, 1946, to the late Hugh and Helen Moore.

He graduated from Crestwood High School in Chesapeake and attended Norfolk State University for two years. A Vietnam Veteran, he served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1974 before he was honorably discharged. Following his military service, he worked for Naval Sea Systems Command in Crystal City, VA for nine years and later retired from the United States Postal Service with sixteen and a half years of service. He then worked at GEICO in Fredericksburg for eleven years until his second retirement in 2015. Not content being idle, he started working part-time as a Marshall at Augustine Golf Club in Stafford, VA. He was an inactive member of Triangle Lodge #293, Triangle, VA.

His hobbies were golfing, dancing, and listening to jazz and gospel music. Spending quality time with family was very important to him. Many could always count on him for an encouraging word, prayer, endless laughs and even a good story that was closed with "I ain't lying"! He loved to cook and, in his retirement, always made sure to have dinner ready when Sylvia came home from work.

He united with First Mount Zion Baptist Church on September 3, 1993, and sang with the Men's Choir and Men's Praise Team of the Music and Arts Ministry. His past service includes the Men's Ministry and the Par for the Course Small Group.

Leaving to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 50 and a half years, Sylvia; three daughters, Tempril Moore (Upper Marlboro, MD), Terry Floyd (Vernon), Newport News, VA, and Dana Moore (Clinton, MD), one son, Amir Moore (Houston, TX); a sister, Adrienne Oliver (Jerome) Asheville, NC, a brother, Garyl Moore (Verona) York, PA; a niece, McCall Oliver, four nephews Garyl (Carola), Leland, Darryl and Andre Moore; nine grandchildren, Jaylon, Lauren, Aaron, Langston, Anayah, Makeda, Keyona, Kejuan and Kema; and two great-grandchildren, Skylar and Kingston.

Al was preceded in death by his brother Leslie Moore and sister Barbara May.

We have no doubt you have reunited with loved ones and are singing in the heavenly choir! We will forever hold you in our hearts until we meet again.

A viewing will be held at First Mount Zion Baptist Church, 16622 Dumfries Road, Dumfries, VA, 22025 on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 10:00 AM followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM. The interment will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 10:30 AM.
